I always look forward to having Thanksgiving with my friends more than I do Thanksgiving itself. Having a big meal with the people I care about the most is incredibly heartwarming, especially when I get to cook with them.

This year I made brussels sprouts roasted in the oven with salt, pepper, olive oil, and butter, mashed potatoes and a delicious pear tart from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I also helped GG with the turkey.

The tart was made of pear slices, apricot preserves, sugar, butter, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice and zest. Absolutely delicious, but I didn’t cook the filling long enough for it to hold its shape when sliced so it kinda turned into slop.

GG brined the turkey overnight, then we made a compound butter which I spread under the skin before putting it in the oven. It was the first time I actually enjoyed turkey. This was also my first time making turkey since swearing not to make another one after several disasters, including dropping the entire bird on the floor a few years ago.

Kennedy’s blue potatoes were the highlight though.

This weekend I got an old Hi8 camcorder. I love the look of analog CCD camcorders, but had to figure out a way to digitize the tapes. The USB capture card I got is pretty straightforward, but there’s a pretty apparent loss in color due to having to record on tapes. Also, playing back the recordings to re-record them onto my computer is kinda a pain in the ass. Thinking about getting an external recorder and recording tapeless, but there’s something about physical media that I love.

Fun evening with my friends. We got some dinner, played with the CDJs, then had movie monday. We watched Gladiator.

Experimenting with motion while scanner is operating. Very intrigued by the colors and mirrored images. Tried doing a few with multiple images but it became hard to move them together.

G001359 G001362 G001365 G001367 G001381 Last night I saw Boris perform Amplifier Worship. It was hands-down the best show I’ve been to.

It felt like so much more than just a show. The synergy between the group’s outfits and aesthetics, and singer’s theatrics all accompanied by the thick, heavy music formed an atmosphere that I was completely and totally enthralled in.

It was one of very few times that I’ve lost myself in music. My surroundings faded, thoughts of the mundane had quieted. There was nobody around me. I ceased to be myself. I simply felt like a vessel absorbing the wall of sound that the group was producing, immersed in the world they were creating.

The moments when the music calmed, I stepped back into reality. I thought of how these were people, just like me. I thought of how amazing it is that people possess and cultivate such talent to create incedible music. I thought about the level of coordination it takes as the guitarists on opposite sides of the stage raise their hands together then bring them down, creating impossibly massive noise that I feel in my core. The singer sits on the second drum kit and synchronizes with the drummer. The music begins again. I slip back into trance.

It’s truly special when you can lose yourself in music like that, and it changes the way I listen to music. Instead of simply listening to catchy melodies or heavy guitar riffs, I think about what the artist is trying to show me. What emotions they’re trying to convey. What world they want me to step into. It’s something I strive to do with my photos and when I DJ. I want everyone to be able to experience that state of being lost in music.

My neck hurts.
